Be Ready for 2009

I have heard several people in the industry recently talking about their plan for 2009. I have seen many affiliate marketers "play it by ear" when it comes to what their plan for the next month, week, or even day in some cases. While being flexible is great and allows you to adapt to changes in traffic or offers, it does keep you from going to the next step. I guarantee you that the big players out there have a plan for how they are going to make their money, and you should to if you want to get to their level.

Am I talking about scheduling out your whole day? No (although for some people this isn't a bad idea, as it can keep you focused), what I am talking about is knowing what your goals are and how to reach them for the year. So how do you do this?

Step 1: Have a goal

This seems obvious but so few people do this. You need to have a goal, and I don't mean "I want to make lots of money" or "I want to quit my job". A goal is something specific, so you know where your headed and can plan to get there. If you want to make lots of money, how much do you want to make? $50k, $100k, $250k a year? If you want to quit your day job, how much money do you need to make to do it? It doesn't have to be a financial goal, although that is the easiest for most people to see.

Also, it is important to have all your goals written down. Keep track of them and look at them once a week. If it isn't on the top of your mind you will forget what your goal was, much like those last new years resolutions you made.

Step 2: Break your goal down

Know how your goals break down. If you have a dollar amount figure how how much you need monthly or even weekly to meet that goal. If your goal is a number of sites or time spent working on affiliate marketing, you still need to break down your goal into smaller ones.

These smaller goals will let you know how you are doing. Are you beating your monthly goal, if so this doesn't mean you can slack off. It shows that what you are doing is working, keep it up. If your not then you know you need to step it up. Try new campaigns, branch out into other areas or niches, whatever you can think of to get to that goal.

Step 3: Start Working

Suprisingly, this is the step so many people miss. Once you have your goals written down get to work.

Some things to remember.

- Look at your goals, don't obsess about them. If you spend all day looking at how you are doing towards your goal, you will never reach it.

- Never back down from your goal. If you keep shaving your goal down to make it more reachable, you will be shocked at the end of the year by how far you missed the mark.

- At the same time, adjust your smaller goals to know what you need to do to get there. Missed your monthley goal last month, well then you need to do even better next month.

Hope this gives everyone some things to think about. Affiliate Marketing is a great business, and there is some real money to be made out there. Hopefully by working together, we can all see that money.

Affiliate Marketing

If you are looking to get advertisement for your website there are several things you need to look for and find while on your search. In this post I will talk about the pros and cons of using advertisements from performance marketing affiliate networks. First is what kind of network is this, performance marketing affiliate network CPA(cost per action or acquisition), CPL(cost per lead), or CPS(cost per sale). If this is the kind of ads that a affiliate network has and promotes then there are several pros and cons for you and the network that has the offers.
First the pros, which are very similar and related for you and the affiliate network after all you have the same goal, generate revenue. Performance marketing offers are a easier to track and prevent against fraud, for you and the affiliate network which both of these are advantages to you, as an affiliate or publisher. Any offer you run from any network you want there to be a pretty good quality control policy in place to protect you now and in the future. If the affiliate network has good Q.C. policies they will be able to protect your website if you have CPS based shopping offers from fraudsters and thieves who may have stolen bank account or credit card information and attempting to get free products. Also the affiliate network will be able to catch fraud affiliates that are entering fraud information, fairly easily because all leads and information entered is verified. If this issue gets out of hand and you are generating good traffic and the network pulls the offer you lose money and this could seriously affect you. These are good reasons to consider an offer from an performance based affiliate network.
Now the cons, you have to make sure you find a legit affiliate network. This is as difficult to do as it is for an affiliate network to find legit affiliates such as yourself. Alot of performance based affiliate networks pay anywhere from net 15 to net 60 depending on the amount of traffic you generate, how long you have been an affiliate and if they own any of there offers. If they get all of there offers from other networks, then they have to wait for the advertiser to pay the network they got the offer from and then your affiliate network has to get paid, then you. The time frame that you get paid from a network does not make them good or bad, but waiting is a con. There are affiliate networks out there that don’t pay regularly or at all, the best way to find the bad networks is to read blogs and forums. Not all of the blogs or forums will spell out the good ones, but the bad ones will be and all the reasons why.

SEO Web Designers

Many web designers are not involved in the SEO process for sites that are already built. Instead, these processes usually involve landing page optimization to help the pages site rank. However for new sites or sites being redesigned.

As a site is being designed and built, you should involve a designer who is skilled at SEO from the very beginning. An SEO professional will bring a perspective very different then that of a site owner. He can bring to the table an understanding of how well-written marketing copy and balenced keywords can help site traffic and convert vistors into buyers. Additional, he can offer direction as to the best way to add content to the site while keeping it optomized.

The most important role a web designer skilled in SEO plays is in knowing how to best construct the site. He understand that sites which have 100% of the content in Flash, or which use frames will pose problems during the optimization process. He will also understand how to overcome some of the SEO limitations that dynamic sites pose.

When the design team is aware and involved in the optimization process from the beginning, a site can be optimized “from the ground up” as it is being built, which will involve less time spent by the SEO consultant later. This can also provide a level of optimization that is often not practical after a site has already been constructed.

When keyword research is completed before the site construction has started, designers can use them when they create new pages and graphics files in order to derive the benefit of keyword-rich file names. Instead of using words like “logo” and “header,” the designer can choose keywords that are more descriptive. They can also provide a basic Meta tag set which can be used for the site. By including the Meta tags in the site templates, the work of editing each page later can often be avoided.

The first and foremost role the SEO has when a site is being redesigned page names don't change when performing a site update. Otherwise, when the new site is launched, the traffic to the site may substantially drop off when people click on search engine listings that no longer exist.

To combat this phenomenon, the designer will advise to re-use the old page names as much as possible. If that’s not possible, there are two ways to deal with this problem. A custom 404-error page can be installed to inform the visitor that the page no longer exist and present them with several options to continue into the site. Or redirection pages can be set up which use the old page name and an informative message for the visitor. The pages should offer one or more clickable links, and might include a timed-redirect that should be at least 30 seconds before taking the visitor to the page with the new name.

The second option is more desirable, since it allows the search engine to note the change, follow the link to the new page and add it to its index at some later point. And of course, if new pages are added, or the filenames have to change, it provides a chance to use filenames that can be optimized with keyword phrases.
